Google is introducing Search Generative Experience (SGE), a new approach that integrates artificial intelligence to provide more personalized and relevant search results. Unlike traditional search engines, which rely on keyword matching, SGE uses machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to better understand user intent and generate responses tailored to their needs.

What is SGE and how does it work?

With SGE, searches such as “plants suitable for a dark room” will no longer display only a list of web articles. Instead, they will provide an AI-generated answer, similar to responses offered by ChatGPT or Bard.This answer will be accompanied by source links (three articles) displayed on the right side of the page, while the rest of the results will appear below the AI-generated response.

The SGE impact on Google search results pages

It is important to note that SGE is still an experiment that is currently being tested in certain countries. There are still many unknown factors regarding how it will be implemented in the long term and what the full impact of these changes will be.

In other words, what we are seeing now is only an initial version of this Google functionality. The final version may be completely different from what we currently know. However, we can already say that the implementation of SGE will significantly impact Google’s search results pages. Some of the most important changes include:

  1. The importance of top rankings: Being featured among the top three source articles used in AI-generated responses will become essential for generating significant traffic.
  2. Website authority and search intent: Content from high-quality and authoritative sources will have a higher chance of being used in SGE responses.
  3. Reduced traffic from simple queries: Users will receive detailed answers directly in the search results page, reducing the need to visit other websites.

Advantages and disadvantages of SGE

Like any new technology, SGE comes with both advantages and disadvantages. While the benefits seem to be more user-focused and the drawbacks more relevant for businesses, these aspects must be considered to ensure that upcoming changes do not take organizations by surprise.

Advantages:

  • Increased visibility for high-quality content: Websites with relevant and well-optimized content may benefit from better positioning in the SERP due to AI’s ability to understand context and relevance.
  • More relevant content for users: Optimizing content to answer user questions can increase traffic and engagement on a website.

Disadvantages:

  • Increase in zero-click searches: SGE may display AI-generated answers directly in the results page, reducing the need for users to visit websites.
  • Higher complexity: Implementing and optimizing for SGE may require additional resources, which could be challenging for smaller businesses.
  • Risk of penalties: Low-quality content or unethical SEO tactics may be penalized by advanced AI algorithms, affecting website visibility and traffic.
